'The Hiring Fair' - Axbridge & District Museum

An image of the painting

The Axbridge & District Museum chose a painting of the village square from 1730 that depicted the annual hiring of workers and servants. The themes explored included the transition between the Tudor and Victorian periods, local crime and punishment, retail, employment, the army, buildings, transport, healthcare, society and culture.

One school that took part used the picture as the inspiration for creating stage scenery for the schools end of term concert. The children studied their own houses as a starting point, visited the square, modelled their finished pieces on specific buildings, recreated the Town Square in miniature and created two prominent buildings for the stage setting. You read all about the schools play here in the local newspaper.

Another school is planning to spend the first half term of the next academic year on the project across the school, using it as the basis for work across the whole curriculum.

The museum created an information pack of resources to accompany this project which can be found here.
