Accreditation must be less bureaucratic
MLA's response to the two studies it commissioned to help inform its review of museum Accreditation is now available on-line. The recommendations from the studies, based on the views of more than 1000 museum colleagues regarding the value, shortcomings and future of Accreditation will directly inform the scheme's development.
The main underlying message from the sector is that Accreditation is highly valued and has made a real difference to museums, but it must be less bureaucratic and more representative. It must also serve as a key tool in the improvement of museum services with a focus on the impact they make for the public.
Eight working parties made up of experts from the sector are now redefining the requirements of the standard. These groups will continue until March 2010, when the outcomes will be collated into a draft set of revised scheme requirements. These will then be publicised as part of a second consultation exercise in Spring 2010.
