Involve your museum in Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is held on 27 January each year and more than 5,500 events take place around the country on or around this date. HMD offers museums and galleries an opportunity to spark interest and to inspire creativity through collections, to challenge discrimination and promote a positive activity for the whole community. By organising an HMD display or workshop, you can bring a meaningful experience to your visitors and school groups, and engage new audiences. Next year's theme is on The Power of Words. The theme explores how language has been used in the past, and how it is used in the present day.

HMD activities could focus on the impact that words had in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, through propaganda used to incite, through slogans written in resistance, and through memoirs written to record and respond to what was going on. The words that we see and hear all around us today – in newspapers, online, in conversations – the words that we choose to use, all have an impact upon us and those around us.
