Museum Collections Officer - Museum of Gloucester

We are seeking an experienced Museum Collections Officer to join the Gloucester Museum’s service at a time of redevelopment and change. We are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic person to join our small, friendly team, leading the care of the city’s collections and supporting the development of a programme of exhibitions and activity; using collections to enhance their impact and relevance.

The Museum of Gloucester tells the story of the city’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. The extensive archaeology Collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Table Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. The Collection also includes natural history, geology, social, industrial and maritime history, fashion and the art collection has a number of significant pieces including paintings by Richard Wilson and Thomas Gainsborough.

You will lead the development and implementation of the Collections policies and procedures and will ensure the safe management of the Museum Collection and its 5 stores. The Museums service is undergoing a Collections decant from the former Gloucester Life Museum and it’s expected that the successful applicant will play a lead role in this project. You will identify and oversee a number of strategic Museum projects that will take the service and its Collection into the future, leading digital aspirations, interpretation and supporting audience development to ensure that the collections continue to be relevant to the city, its people and its future.

About you

You will have a strong understanding of collections management principles and museum processes and be committed to ensuring that our collections and the stories that they tell are used effectively for our audiences now and into the future. You’ll have knowledge of current best practice in relation to care and management of buildings and collections care including Museum Accreditation standards. You will be inquisitive and creative, passionate about Museums and their Collections, be able to work collaboratively and strategically as well as be able to manage and direct a small focused team.
