Interpretation Project Officer - SS Great Britain Trust

Job title: Interpretation Project Officer


Hours: 36.25 hours per week


Reporting to: Head of Interpretation


Purpose of job: To deliver high quality, innovative and exciting interpretation for a range of audiences, in line with ss Great Britain Trust’s Strategic Plan and Interpretation Policy.


Aims: To implement imaginative and effective projects interpreting all aspects of the SS Great Britain and the SS Great Britain Trust’s collections, in order to increase engagement and understanding for audiences. To assist in maintaining consistently high standards of existing interpretation through effective and sustainable maintenance. To contribute to the development of ideas, proposals and delivery planning for new interpretative projects


Main tasks


1. Develop and deliver planned new interpretation projects under the direction of the Head of Interpretation, and within agreed budgets and deadlines.


2. Work with Technical Services, Events, and Visitor Services teams to plan the practical delivery of interpretation projects.


3. Work with the Collections Team to ensure that interpretation projects are planned and delivered in compliance with the Trust’s Collections Management, Conservation policies and Interpretation Policy.


4. Work with Communications and Marketing colleagues to ensure that new interpretation offers are communicated effectively.


5. Contribute to the development of future interpretation under the direction of the Head of Interpretation.


6. Carry out research, using primary and secondary sources, to ensure the highest standards of historical accuracy of new interpretation on-site.


7. Maintain and refresh the existing interpretation in all areas of the site, taking hands-on, practical and/or problem-solving approaches as needed, to maintain a standard of excellence. Work with Technical Services staff as necessary to ensure that issues of damage, failure and wear and tear are promptly resolved.


8. Plan and carry out evaluation of visitors’ experience of interpretation on site.


9. Maintain an awareness of current developments, research and best practice in interpretation projects and exhibitions at a local and national level.


10. Support colleagues within the department to plan and deliver programme activities and events.


11. Other duties as required by the Head of Interpretation.


Person specification


Candidates for this position should demonstrate in their CV that they meet the following person specification.


1. Education Candidates must be educated to degree level in history, archaeology or another relevant subject, or must have equivalent relevant experience.


2. Essential experience, skills and personal qualities


Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have:


a. Practical experience of delivering interpretation projects, including project planning, programme management, budget management, procurement, and liaison with contractors and suppliers;


b. Experience of using research, and an understanding of the relevance of primary and secondary sources to heritage interpretation;


c. Experience and understanding of how interpretation can engage with different audiences.


d. Experience of working with volunteers;


e. Resourcefulness, perseverance and good problem-solving skills;


f. Good communication skill;


g. Ability to work alone, and also as part of a team;


h. Resilience, energy and imagination.


3. Desirable experience



Candidates should also describe any experience that they have of:


a. Working with industrial heritage and history;


b. Carrying out archive and/or collection-based research using primary and secondary sources;


c. Using and developing practical skills e.g. model-making, electronics, dressmaking, etc.
