Curatorial Volunteer - Coldharbour Mill Working Wool Museum

Coldharbour Mill Museum in Devon are looking for potential new members of our curatorial volunteer team to assist in a full range of collections care and management tasks including conservation, cataloguing, interpretation and exhibitions.

Coldharbour Mill is in Devon – it’s a small friendly museum with a big future. We welcome visitors from all over the UK and abroad to experience and learn about the development of the textile industry, centred on the Industrial Revolution. Our team of curatorial volunteers assist in the full range of collections care and management tasks including conservation, cataloguing, interpretation and exhibitions. In addition to the museum collections that include vintage machinery both working and static, we have both paper and textile archives. We need to continue the task of fully digitising our records, as well as ensure that the effects of environmental and pest-related issues can be monitored effectively, and preventive measures undertaken. There are also opportunities to assist with developing interpretation and displays, both permanent and temporary, to sample other museum roles including funding bid writing and those which offer engagement with the local community and the visiting public, as well as take part in training.

We’re looking for people who are:
  • friendly and personable with good written and spoken English communication skills
  • team workers who enjoy working with a diverse range of people
  • keen to learn about the practicalities of museum work
  • able to undertake simple computer-based tasks, and other administrative tasks
  • willing to donate at least 1 day per week for 3-6 months (this can be flexible).

Travel expenses are available.

Training and support: We have an induction process, during which we give our Volunteers the information we believe they need to enjoy their time with us. Training is mainly 'hands-on', and any specific training will be provided as opportunities arise. We are happy to provide volunteers with references and CV support for potential employment. Volunteers are given regular feedback and we are open to suggestions on how we can improve the volunteer experience. This is an opportunity to gain practical skills as well as handle the kinds of challenges faced on a daily basis by museum staff and volunteers. No previous experience is required, and it would provide an ideal practical introduction for someone considering or already studying for a career in the heritage sphere, museums or conservation, with archives or with historic textiles. Equally we would welcome applications from anyone with prior experience of working in a museum.

We invite anyone interested in this role to submit a CV by email with a brief covering note stating why you wish to be considered for this role and how long you might be able to stay with us.
