We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated team as Curatorial Intern. Working with a small staff team (Director, Community Engagement Curator and Apprentice) and over 80 volunteers you will gain valuable experience.
This Internship will provide experience in a wide range of curatorial tasks, typical of those carried out by museum professionals in smaller, regional museums, including for example the following key tasks:
Supporting museum staff and volunteers with collections management in line with Museum Accreditation standards, including collections care, practical conservation work and documentation tasks such as cataloging objects and updating museum records
Completing gallery inspections, environmental monitoring and reporting maintenance issues
Researching and developing exhibition content relating to the museums audience development plan
Assisting in delivering a programme of temporary and permanent exhibitions and displays, working collaboratively with volunteers and members of the community
Sharing research and stories from collections digitally to provide greater access to collections
Assisting the Community Engagement Curator with development and delivery of learning activities
Supporting the museums programme of events and activities
Respond to research enquires from the general public
Creating content for the museums social media and website
Hosting at least 1 curatorial intern peer network meeting and attending training and peer support networks led by Cornwall Museums Partnership
Maintaining records of work to inform funding reports and evaluation
Taking responsibility for health and safety of yourself, colleagues, customers and contractors
Degree or relevant experience in a museum/gallery/heritage/cultural setting
3 A Levels (or equivalent) GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or 4 (or equivalent)
Experience of working/volunteering in a museum, gallery, cultural or historic venue or in a customer service role
Experience of volunteering or working with volunteers
Interest in the Museum of Cornish Life
Excellent IT skills including use of Word, Excel and Social Media
Good at multi-tasking with strong organisational skills
Commitment to learning and attending training
Good communication skills
The internship will also have responsibility for developing a project based on their own career aims, to be agreed with the museum Director.
The intern will be supported by an individual training plan and budget to allow you to attend training and undertake study trips to museums/galleries. Through Cornwall Museums Partnership you will benefit from and contribute to a peer network of other curatorial interns in Cornwall. This role is an entry-level position designed to provide hands on work experience in a range of museum activities. We welcome all backgrounds and are interested in your potential to develop.
