Archivist (Maternity Leave cover) - Bath Preservation Trust

Part-time fixed term contract working 1 day a week to provide maternity leave cover from 1 September 2019 until June 2020.

Purpose of role: To undertake the ongoing cataloguing and storing of the Bath Preservation Trust Archive collection and manage the small library collection, housed at the Museum of Bath Architecture. This includes facilitating researchers to the archive and library collection and managing a small team of archive and library volunteers. The main activities of the role are described below. This is not an exhaustive list of duties but a guide to the main priorities. The post holder may be required to undertake other duties and responsibilities compatible with the overall scope of the post. They are expected to use their judgement about priorities within the overall purpose of the role. Key responsibilities
  • Continuing cataloguing of Bath Preservation Trust archive collection.
  • Ensuring items stored appropriately to best practice standards of conservation.
  • Updating and maintaining computer based catalogue and on-line catalogue for archive collection.
  • Supervise small team of volunteers and undertake continuing training of volunteers in conservation and archive handling.
  • Answer public and internal enquiries regarding archive and library holdings.
  • Facilitate public research visits to the archive and library.
  • Accepting and entering new items to the collection.
  • Managing and responding to requests for reproductions and image licenses relating to the archive collection.
  • Meeting compliance requirements of Statutory Polices for example Copyright, Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
  • Review Archive and Library Management and Preservation Policy forward plan for the archives.
  • Work with set timetable and budget.
  • Report regularly to the Bath Preservation Trust Senior Curator.

Person Specification: Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Professional archive qualification and membership to the Archives and Records Association
  • Demonstrable experience of database systems
  • Extensive demonstrable experience of catalogue creations and management
  • Demonstrable experience of working with and managing volunteers
  • Experience of sourcing and specifying conservation storage materials
  • Experience and understanding of Data Protection, Copyright and Freedom of Information policies
  • Ability to work within set time and budget constraints
  • Extensive demonstrable experience of working in a similar role


  • Knowledge of the built environment of Bath and its history
  • Interest in the architectural, social and cultural history of Georgian Britain Other
  • Some lifting and carrying of archive boxes etc
  • Some lone working may be required in this role
