SW Federation Forum - Working with Young People

Monday 13 May 2013, M-Shed, Bristol

This free event is a unique opportunity to gain advice, ideas and practical solutions for engaging with young people in a variety of ways.

Who should attend?

Museum managers, learning/development staff and volunteers - anyone working in a museum who wants to widen participation and increase diversity in their museum’s programming, planning, volunteer involvement or audience.

Speakers & panel members:

  • Ben Meller is Bristol Museums Community Partnerships Officer responsible for developing and delivering community engagement programmes and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation 'Our Museum' programme.
  • Louise Donovan is Creative Programme Manager for the National Trust at Castle Drogo responsible for managing and delivering the new visitor experience for Castle Drogo Inside Out. This includes working with creative partners, supporting colleagues in learning and community engagement, and helping volunteers to engage existing and new audiences with the project. In her previous role in Bristol she was responsible for developing and delivering new learning programmes focussing on the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the service's offer for 14-19 year olds.
  • Tamzyn Smith is Lead Developer – Arts & Culture – with the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), the bridge organisation funded by Arts Council England to increase young people’s participation in art and culture by raising awareness and brokering partnerships between young people’s organisations and the cultural sector.
  • Fran McLarty works for RIO as the Regional Development Coordinator, Arts Award & Artsmark in the North of our region.
  • Emma Ayling is Curator of the Priest’s House Museum Wimborne in Dorset. The museum’s Youth Panel has won many plaudits and continues to influence developments at the museum, where the number of young people wishing to volunteer outnumbers the places available.
  • Sophie Cummings is Collections Manager at Lydiard House and Park in Swindon where she has developed and implemented a flagship volunteer programme to engage young volunteers and supports young people into training and employment.

Devon Museums Annual Forum: Museums- The Next Generation,  Working With Young People

Monday 20th May, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth

Young people are the future for museums but 16 to 24 year olds are the least likely to visit. How can we engage young people as visitors or volunteers, encourage them to get involved and make our museum collections and exhibitions more meaningful to the next generation? What do they want? Who should we be talking to? What do we need to know? And where do we get funding to do this?

Hopefully the top tips from experts in the field including Lowell Black, Youth Programmes Manager at the Museum of London, HLF advice on applying for Young Roots funding  and practical advice and case studies from those who have ‘been there, done that’ will provide answers to these questions.

Refreshments and lunch provided, networking opportunities and behind the scenes tours of Plymouth Museum also available.

The perfect day for anyone involved in or interested in museums the Forum is excellent value at still only £15 per person (Early Bird Booking) or £15.50 after 3rd May.

OPEN TO ALL. Book your place now! Why not bring along a friend!

Introduction to Take One

Monday 17 June 2013, Somerset Heritage Centre, Taunton, Somerset

Do you want to know how to encourage schools to work with your museum and engage children with collections?

Somerset Heritage & Libraries Service is holding a practical development day for professionals and volunteers from museums and archives planning to run their own learning project.

The development day will inform you about the Take One model, a hugely successful project created by the National Gallery. It is aimed at showing teachers how single objects (artefacts, documents, paintings and sites) can be used as a valuable resource across the curriculum.

For more information, take at look at the National Gallery’s website and the SW Champions website.

What you will learn

By the end of the day you will:

  • Be familiar with the Take One model and be able to apply it to items from your own site and collections.
  • Understand the factors involved in starting a Take One programme in your organisation.
  • Begin the process to become an official provider of Take One, allowing you to use National Gallery branding.
  • Receive resources to enable you to run your own Take One programme.

Booking

Places are limited so please book quickly. To secure your place please visit our online booking system. Alternatively you can request a booking form via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
