Georgian faces in Dorset

T_GoochThe Understanding British Portraits Network is organising a seminar on 3rd February 2011 to co-incide with a major exhibition at Dorset County Museum, Georgian Faces: Portrait of a county , which runs from 15th January until 30th April 2011.

Speakers will explore various strands of eighteenth-century portrait practice in Dorset. Themes will include Sir Joshua Reynolds' use of his West Country connections to develop his patron base, costume as represented in the exhibition and the contemporary phenomenon of portraitists moving between the metropolis and the south west in response to the pattern of the social seasons. The seminar also includes a case study into a learning programme successfully piloted by the Museum and insights from the exhibition's curator into the discoveries and challenges involved in the co-ordination of this major show.
