Low-cost loans for the conservation of scheduled or listed buildings, or those in conservation areas

The Architectural Heritage Fund provides grants and low-cost loans for the conservation of scheduled or listed buildings, or those in conservation areas. The following grants and loans are available to qualifying charities:
Options Appraisal Grants - Up to 75% of the cost of looking at the key conservation issues affecting the building, examining all the available options, considering their viability, and exploring possible sources of funding. The maximum grant is normally £7,500, but in exceptional circumstances this can be up to £12,500.
Project Development Grant – Up to £25,000, available to Building Preservation Trusts only, to help with the costs of developing a project, and to take it towards the point where site work begins.
Low-interest loans – Up to £500,000, available to registered charities to acquire and/or repair and re-use historic buildings.
Repair grants are not available, only grants for conservation appraisal.

Purchasing pictures and works of art not later than the 18th century in date

Under the terms of the will of the late Walter G Beecroft the residue of his estate was bequeathed to the Museums Association to form the Beecroft Bequest. The income deriving from the bequest was to be distributed as grant-in-aid to art galleries and museums in the British Isles towards the purchases of paintings and works of art not later than 1800 in date.
To be eligible museums must be institutional members of the MA and based in the UK and be accredited / registered under the MLA scheme or have applied for accreditation. Preference will be given to organisations with annual revenue expenditure not exceeding £1,000,000. In the case of branch museums, the revenue budget of the parent organisation applies.
The purchase must not be later in date than 1800, can be of fine or decorative arts (e.g. paintings, watercolours, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, furniture, textiles) and other items of aesthetic merit. For other items, e.g. coins, the case for their aesthetic merit must be made in the application.
The object must be genuine and of good quality, must represent good value for money and there must be a sound reason for the acquisition.
The applicant must demonstrate how it meets the organisation's acquisition policy/ aims and objectives. The cost must be between £500-£5,000 and applications for grants for items which have already been purchased will not be considered.

Funding for the conservation and regeneration of historic buildings

The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF), which is a registered charity that promotes the conservation and regeneration of historic buildings in the UK. Funding is available to voluntary organisations building preservation trusts to regenerate historic buildings to create community and education facilities, workspace and homes.
To be eligible to apply for funding through the AHF, organisations need to be a registered charity and the building(s) must be listed, scheduled as an ancient monument or in a Conservation Area (if in a Conservation Area, it must be of acknowledged historic or architectural importance). The project must also involve a change of ownership and/or a change of use.
Previously funded projects include turning rundown historic buildings into community theatres, resource centres, community learning centres, workspaces, places to live and community meeting places, etc. 
The next closing date for applications is the 21stOctober 2010.

Prize for cultural heritage

Applications will soon be open for the 2011 edition of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage, which promotes successful initiatives on heritage conservation practices. Prizes are awarded under four categories: Conservation; Research; Dedicated Service by Individuals or organisations; Education, training and awareness-raising.
The deadline for applying to the 2011 edition is on 1st October 2010.

Older people’s programme launched

Comic Relief has announced that it is seeking applications through its older People’s programme.  The aim of the programme is to support older people to bring positive change to their communities.  The fund is open to a range of organisations including self help and community groups, voluntary organisations, community interest companies and social enterprises who are targeting their work at older people aged 65 and over. Most grants are expected to be of between £15,000 and £40,000 per year. Grants may be for up to 3 years. 
The deadline for submitting your first-stage application is the 17th December 2010.  Applications chosen for further consideration will then have until the 22nd February to submit a full application.

Funding for places of worship built before 1896

The William and Jane Morris Fund is open to applications from churches, chapels and other places of worship built before 1896. The Fund offers grants of up to £1,000 towards work concerned with the conservation of decorative features such as, stained glass windows, sculpture, furniture, internal monuments and tombs, and wall paintings. Grants towards major structural repairs and fabric maintenance may be considered under exceptional circumstances. Applications must be received by 31st  March for consideration in the May.

Community awards from large British supermarket

The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £500 and £4,000 to local projects that support children and their education and welfare, elderly people and adults and children with disabilities. Applications for grants for children and their education and welfare should be made between the 1st December and the 31st January or the 1st May and the 30th June. Applications for grants for elderly people and adults and children with disabilities should be made between the 1st February and the 31st March or the 1st August and the 30th September.

Heritage grants for learning about history – lottery funded

The next closing date for applications under the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Heritage Grants Scheme for projects over £1million and under £5million is the 11th October 2010.  Under the Heritage Grants scheme funding is available for projects that relate to the national, regional or local heritage of the UK. To be eligible for funding a project must help people to learn about their own and other people’s heritage, conserve the UK’s diverse heritage for present and future generations to experience and enjoy;  and help more people, and a wider range of people, to take an active part in and make decisions about heritage.  HLF welcome applications from single organisations and partnerships. Priority is given to not-for-profit organisations, and partnerships led by not-for-profit organisations. If private owners are involved, HLF expect the public benefit to be greater than any private gain.  In addition, the HLF also makes grants of £50,001 - £1 million; and Grants in excess of £1 million.  These are subject to different application deadlines information on which can be access through the link below.

Support for community, heritage and environmental projects

WREN which provides funding for community, heritage and environmental projects in areas close to landfill sites by awarding grants for environmental, heritage and community projects has announced the next application deadlines for 2010. Funding is available through three grant programmes. The small grants programme which provides grants between £2,000 and £15,000 with a total project cost of under £50,000; the WREN Main Grant Scheme offers funding of between £15,001 and £50,000 and the Biodiversity Action Fund which provides funding of between £75,000 and £250,000 to deliver biodiversity improvement projects under Object DA. Eligible organisations that can apply for funding include environmental organisations, voluntary groups, charities, not-for-profit organisations and community groups. The application deadlines are the 9th November 2010 for the main and small grants programme. The deadline for the Biodiversity Action Fund is the 29th January 2011.

Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies

The Society’s Schools Committee makes grants to schools to help promote the teaching of Latin and Roman studies. Most of the grants are awarded for the purchase of textbooks and other books on Roman topics, but the Committee also makes awards to groups and schools organising lectures or study days on Roman themes, and has recently made money available for archaeology fieldwork bursaries.
There is no special application form, but applicants should provide information about the level of their departmental budget, the type of courses taught, and in the case of applications for books, a list of the books wanted with their prices. Applications from schools planning to start courses in Latin are particularly welcome.  Grants usually range from £50 to £500.  The next closing date for applications is the 1st November 2010.

£500 from leading software company

Software Company Intuit UK has announced that up until Friday 19th November 2010 it will be awarding £500 each fortnight to a winning UK charity, chosen from a final shortlist of five as voted for by the public.  To enter Charities need to outline what they would do with the £500.  Members of the public will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourite charity.  All the shortlisted charities will receive a free QuickBooks Pro package worth almost £500.  The closing dates for the remaining challenges are the 14th October, 2nd November and 19th November 2010

Grants in the areas of the arts, community education, medical, environment, health, religion, welfare and youth

The Garfield Weston Foundation offers support to organisations that are registered charities and excepted or exempt charities such as churches, hospitals, educational establishments, museums and housing corporations. Founded in 1958 the Garfield Weston Foundation is a UK based, general grant-giving charity that makes grants in the areas of the Arts, Community Education, Medical, Environment, Health, Religion, Welfare and Youth.
Applications are considered individually by the Foundation and the following issues are taken into consideration:
o The financial viability of the organisation;
o The degree of need for the project requiring funding;
o The amount spent on administration and fundraising as compared to the charitable activities;
o The ability to raise sufficient funding to meet the appeal target;
o Whether the organisation has appropriate priorities and plans in place to manage its activities.
There is no limit on the size of grant. There are no application deadlines.
