The fishing industry is at the heart of the heritage of St Ives and has shaped the town’s physical and social history for the past few hundred years. The St Ives Museum has an excellent display of artefacts that illustrate this industry and the St Ives Archive holds important written material and photographs of many aspects of it. As the years go by there are less clues around the town, however, to remind everyone where remains of the industry can still be seen.
St Ives Archive is pleased to announce, therefore, that it has obtained funding from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) with the support of the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) to set up a St Ives Heritage Fishing Industry Project, starting very shortly. The project will enable a fishing industry resource officer to be employed on a part time basis for sixteen months to raise awareness of the fishing heritage by promoting it in schools and to visitors. There will also be an opportunity to work with other fishing communities in Cornwall providing cross-Cornwall support for other fishing industry archives. At the same time reminiscent material will be created for working with the older population.
