Bristol has a diverse range of both independent and city council museums.
Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives is the City Council service which runs the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, M Shed, Red Lodge Museum, Georgian House Museum and the Blaise Castle House Museum. In addition it runs the Kings Weston Roman Villa site and the Bristol Record Office.
The service is a Major Partner Museum with ACE under the revised Renaissance scheme. Its museum collections cover Archaeology, World Cultures, Biology, Geology, Public History, Fine, Decorative and Eastern Arts and Industrial & Maritime History. Geology, Eastern Art and the collections reflecting the growth and history of the city (the City of Bristol collection) are all Designated. During 2012 it took over ownership of the collections formerly held in the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum (now closed).
