Tom completed both his undergraduate degree and his post-graduate certificate of education at Oxford University. While teaching, he developed his interest in museums by volunteering to help with family activities at the Ashmolean Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum. Three weeks volunteering full-time at the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne, New Zealand, provided valuable experience that helped him secure his first professional position in August 2006 as Education Officer at the Museum of East Asian Art. This role allowed Tom to develop several exciting projects including working with the China Now festival to develop learning resources for schools across the country. In July 2008, Tom moved to the Bath Preservation Trust as Education and Audience Development Officer with responsibility for developing the education programme at No. 1 Royal Crescent, the Building of Bath Museum and Beckfords Tower.
