Who we are….

The South Western Federation of Museums and Art Galleries (the Federation) is a voluntary subscription based organisation, representing the museum profession in the South West of England.
The Federation was formed in 1931 and since then it has been the one truly representative voice for museums and art galleries in the South West and to this day provides an independent voice for museums and the museum professional.

What we do....

  • We provide the mechanism for exchanging information, encouraging each other and using co-operation and synergies to further all our work
  • We represent and support the museums and galleries of the south west, along with their workers and supporters
  • We promote the value and benefits of the South West’s museums and art galleries

Where are we represented….

The Federation exists to represent the views and interests of museums in the South West to a range of other museum institutions such as the MLA, MLA South West, The South West Museum Hub and the Museum Association.  The Federation has a close and mutually supporting relationship with MLA South West and the South West Museum Hub.

How we work….

Our business is handled by a committee with at least one representative from each county and an observer each from the South West Hub and MLA South West.  The committee meets every quarter with full membership meetings in the Spring and Autumn.

Who can Join ….

Any museum or Art Gallery, their staff, supporters and all those with an interest in the museum sector from within the historic counties of Bristol, Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands.
